Texas Requirements & Who Needs It
Under TFER §228.31, a Certified Food Protection Manager must be present at the food establishment during all hours of operation, and the original certificate must be posted where customers can see it. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and local health departments accept CFPM certificates from ANAB-accredited exams such as ServSafe®.
Exemptions: establishments the health authority considers minimal risk may be exempt, such as those that handle only prepackaged food, do not prepare or handle exposed TCS foods, or are temporary food establishments. Check with your local health department.

Is this accepted in Texas?
Yes. The ServSafe® Food Protection Manager exam is ANAB-accredited and accepted by Texas DSHS and local health departments for the Certified Food Protection Manager requirement in TFER §228.31. Check with your local health department for any additional city or county rules.
Do I need to go to a testing center?
No. You take the ServSafe® Food Manager exam online with a live remote proctor, from home or work, using a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and microphone.
Is the course available in Spanish?
Yes. The course and the remote-proctored exam are available in English or Spanish.
What is on the exam?
The exam has 90 multiple-choice questions (80 scored) and a 2-hour time limit. A passing score is 70% or higher.
How long does the course take?
Most learners finish the training in about 6–10 hours. You can log in and out anytime and continue where you left off.
How long is the certificate valid?
The ServSafe® Food Protection Manager certificate is valid for 5 years.
Is this the same as a Texas Food Handler card?
No. This is the manager-level certification (CFPM). Other food employees need an accredited food handler course within 30 days of employment.
