Legality & Coverage
Is your food handler card legal in California?
Yes. Our California Food Handler Card meets California Senate Bill 602 (SB 602), codified as California Health & Safety Code §113948. California food handlers must get a card from an ANAB-accredited provider within 30 days of hire, and our card meets that requirement in 55 of 58 counties.
Is your card accepted in Los Angeles, Orange and Sacramento counties?
Yes. Our California Food Handler Card is accepted in Los Angeles, Orange, Sacramento, San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara, Fresno, Kern, Ventura and every other California county except Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego.
Does your card work in Riverside or San Bernardino County?
No. Riverside and San Bernardino counties run their own food handler card programs and don’t accept the statewide card. Get your card through rivcoeh.org (Riverside) or wp.sbcounty.gov/dph (San Bernardino).
Does your card work in San Diego County?
Not the statewide card. San Diego County runs its own food handler program. We offer a dedicated San Diego County course that meets it.
How the Course Works
How long does the food handler course take?
Most students finish in about 60–90 minutes. The course is self-paced, so you can complete it in one sitting or over several sessions. Your progress saves automatically and you can resume from any device.
What is on the final exam?
The final exam has at least 40 questions, and you need a score of 70% or higher to pass, as required by California law.
Can I get my food handler card the same day?
Yes. Once you pass the final exam, your California Food Handler Card is available right away as a downloadable, printable PDF. No mail delay and no in-person appointment.
Is the course available in Spanish?
Yes. The California Food Handler course is available in English or Spanish, including all course content, quizzes and the final exam. The price is the same in either language.
Employers & Compliance
Do all California food workers need a food handler card?
Yes. Anyone employed in a California food facility who prepares, stores or serves food must get a food handler card within 30 days of hire. This includes cooks, servers, bussers, hosts, dishwashers, bartenders, food truck workers and grocery deli staff.
Who pays for the food handler card?
Under California SB 476, the employer pays for the card and for the time employees spend on the training and exam. Employers also can’t require a new hire to already have a card as a condition of employment.
Can I buy food handler cards for my employees?
Yes. Choose your quantity at checkout and enroll up to 50 employees in one order at $15.95 each. Each employee takes the course in English or Spanish.
How long is my food handler card valid?
Your California Food Handler Card is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. After 3 years, complete the course and pass the exam again to renew. Keep a digital copy on your phone as well as a printed copy.
Will my employer accept this certificate?
Food handler cards from ANAB-accredited providers are recognized statewide, except in Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. Your certificate shows the issuing provider (Always Food Safe), your name and the issue and expiration dates.
