Maine CDC (Environmental & Community Health) accepts ServSafe^® Food Protection Manager certification as meeting the Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) requirement under the Maine Food Code. Your certificate is recognized statewide and nationwide. Always confirm any city or county rules with your local inspector.

Does my ServSafe^® certification from another state count in Maine?

Yes, if it is still valid. Maine accepts ANAB-accredited CFPM certifications from any state, so a current ServSafe^® Food Protection Manager credential earned elsewhere is valid in Maine until its 5-year expiration date. If your certification has expired, or is close to expiring, you’ll need to recertify by completing the training and passing the exam again.

What happens if my Maine CFPM certification expires?

Your certification is valid for 5 years from your exam date. Once expired, you must recertify by re-taking the training and passing the exam again — Maine does not offer a shorter renewal-only path. If your establishment’s only CFPM has an expired certificate, you have 60 days to bring someone into compliance before Maine health inspectors may cite the establishment. We recommend recertifying 30–60 days before your expiration date to avoid any gap.

Is my Maine establishment exempt from the CFPM requirement?

Most licensed eating establishments in Maine must employ at least one CFPM. Limited exemptions include small bed & breakfasts with 5 or fewer rooms, continental breakfast operations, and certain temporary or occasional food events. If you’re unsure whether your operation qualifies, contact your local health inspector or Maine CDC’s Health Inspection Program before assuming you’re exempt.
