Who Needs a Certified Food Safety Manager in Michigan?
Michigan Food Law Sec. 2129 requires at least one managerial employee who holds an ANSI-accredited food safety manager certification at:
- Food service establishments, such as restaurants, bars, cafeterias, caterers, schools, hospitals and mobile food units
- Extended retail food establishments
- Food service operations inside retail grocery stores
Exempt: licensed temporary food service establishments and vending machines.
Statewide acceptance: the law requires the state and all local units of government to recognize a certified manager “with full faith and credit,” so your ServSafe® certification is honored in every Michigan county.

Does the ServSafe® Food Manager certification meet Michigan’s requirement?
Yes. Michigan Food Law Sec. 2129 requires a food safety manager certified through an ANSI-accredited program that uses the Conference for Food Protection standards. ServSafe® Manager is ANAB-accredited, and Michigan law requires the state and all local health departments to recognize it with full faith and credit.
Is the entire course and exam completed online?
Yes. The training is 100% online and self-paced. When you are ready, you schedule a live, remote-proctored exam from home or work. No testing center visit is required.
How long does the course take?
Most learners finish the training in about 6 to 10 hours, depending on prior food safety experience. You can log in and out anytime and pick up where you left off.
What is the exam format?
The ServSafe® Manager exam has 90 multiple-choice questions and a 2-hour time limit, monitored by a live online proctor. The passing score is set by ServSafe.
What do I need for the remote-proctored exam?
A desktop or laptop computer with a working webcam and microphone, a reliable internet connection, a modern browser, a quiet private room, and a valid government-issued photo ID.
When can I take the exam?
Remote-proctored exams are available 24/7, subject to proctor availability. You choose the date and time that fits your schedule.
When will I receive my certificate?
After your exam is graded, your official ServSafe® certificate is available to download and print from your ServSafe® account. Keep a copy on site for health inspections.
How long is the certification valid?
The ServSafe® Food Manager certification is valid for 5 years. Michigan requires your certification to be current, so plan to recertify before it expires.
Is the course available in Spanish?
Yes. The ServSafe® Manager course and exam are available in English and Spanish. Note that you need Spanish when you register, or call us at 207-217-2500.
Is this the same as a food handler card?
No. This is the manager certification required by Michigan Food Law. Michigan does not have a statewide food handler card requirement. For general staff training, see our Food Handler course.

What if I am outside Michigan?
